The greatest sentence ever written

The more I think about it, the more I believe that the greatest sentence ever written in the history of time is:

"The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people." - the U.S. Constitution

Coming in at a very close second is the following:

"Fuck the Dallas Cowboys if they can't take a joke." - Tom Robbins

Personally, I would have gone for the one eight amendments earlier... but that's a good one too.

And even if they can take a joke... fuck 'em.

What I like about that sentence is that it basically says, "And anything else we forgot, yeah, that too." In other words, the God-given rights of men and women are inestimable. That's awesome.

And yes, fuck 'em right in the ear.

Quite true Andy. I take the two lines in conjunction. Amendment IX basically codified that concept. Amendment I of course is also particularly powerful, as it allows me to say things like, "You know the Dallas Cowboys. Yeah, fuck them."

Actually, Locke had been expressing the idea of rights inherent in existent since 1689, and in fact his language was ripped off by Jefferson (who stole from all the great writers of his and the previous age). Hobbes discussed the idea of rights prior to Locke, a lot of Aquinas' writings are fundamental to the idea of rights, and even early Islamic law held the idea of rights founded in the person that couldn't be taken away.

So really, that sentence was at best a summary of ideas that had been floating around for a long time.

If I'm gonna go with a best sentence it's going to be something along the lines of "I meant what I said, and I said what I meant, an elephant's faithful, one-hundred percent." Now there's an original idea expressed poetically.
