Brief rant

Oh my gosh, Hillary Clinton referred to a historical event. Call CNN!

Seriously, when this story broke, it took me a while to even see the controversy. Were there actually people out there that thought Hillary was suggesting Obama might, or even should, be assassinated? C'mon people. You're really stretching here.

And now she has to do the apology dance. I'm starting to feel for Hillary, which I never thought could happen (and is the inspiration for today's tongue-in-cheek song lyric). It would be to Obama's everlasting credit if he came out and said, "She was just making a historical reference. Quit making mountains out of nothing." He won't, because it would mean calling a lot of people (including some on his staff) stupid, but I wish he would.

Song Lyric of the Day:
"Pleased to meet you hope you guess my name
But what's puzzling you is the nature of my game"
- Rolling Stones, Sympathy for the Devil

You're right. Nevertheless, there still is the "what the hell was she thinking?" factor. I mean, why even bring up the assassination of RFK?

Ben - because everyone who was alive then knows it happened in early June.

I have sizable quibbles with the aptness of her analogy (in 1968 the primaries didn't matter as much, the primary season started later and wasn't as frontloaded then so while significant primaries were still happening in June in '68 everything's done by June 1 nowadays, etc.) but... yeah. You'd have to be an idiot to think that Hillary is suggesting that Barack should be assassinated.

Of course, there are idiots out there who think she killed Vince Foster too. Banditos.

I think you're assuming WAY too much purpose and planning behind the media's news coverage. The media's not enough of a monolithic entity to operate that way.

What the media IS....is shallow and lazy...more willing to cover a story if it fits into their preconceived story line. Now that Obama's all but cinched the nomination (Andy, the problem with your narrative of a Clinton comeback is it's true, but still too little, too late), the press is EXPECTING Clinton to bow out. So they notice stories that make her more likely to bow out (including "Hilary said a moderately stupid thing"). And, of course, once one media outlet covers something....everybody's gotta cover it. (Especially TV news, where no one channel has a mind of its own and they have to talk incessantly to fill the time.)
