Quick post
Madeine Albright (yes, that Madeleine Albright) has a very good article in today's Washington Post about the true meaning of democracy and our country's somewhat interesting, chaotic relationship with it and what it often means in other countries. Such as how it sometimes means groups like Hamas get elected into power. Check it out.

I wonder where our relatively recent obsession with spreading democracy came from. We've never had any compunctions about undermining democratically elected leaders before (ask Allende, Arbenz, Lumumba, Mossadiq...)
Not that I'm complaining. I'm just saying, is all.
That's basically what I meant when I referred to our "interesting, chaotic relationship" with democracy - in the past we haven't been a particularly big fan of it when the people's choice hasn't jived with our own national interests.
But if that truly is beginning to change, I'm not complaining either. However, I think that the current administration's focus on democracy has been largely driven by the fine print, which reads, "provided the democratically elected leader is avidly pro-American."
