Our servicemen deserve better than this fascism

That's right. You heard me.

A post earlier today from Jeff pointed to a website called Wonkette, which points out that, apparently, Marines are not allowed access to certain websites. Specifically, these websites include some personal email sites and sites that may embrace opinions contrary to those the government wants you to have.

Whoever is responsible for this, I have a message: "Fuck you." I'm done with eloquence (granted, I'm not sure I ever had any to begin with). Seriously: this is fascism. There is no other way to describe it.

What was it Van Halen said in the Right Now video? Oh yeah: "Right now our government is doing things we think only other countries do." Apparently that includes this. Blocking access to certain websites is exactly what they do in the countries we claim to want to spread democracy in. It sounds like something Hussein would have done.

My network activity this evening consisted of checking email and surfing friends blogs. I have the freedom to do so because there are people who put on uniforms and put their lives on the line to protect this country. They don't have the freedom to do so because, well, I'm not entirely sure why.

Our brave servicemen and women are fighting for democracy while toiling under fascism. That isn't right, and it needs to end.

The military is all about conformance and unity -- I can understand not wanting dissent in the ranks. But that's about as far as I can go with it. It's hypocritical and deeply ironic as well.

Although it probably goes without saying -- there's much more to freedom than democracy.

on the other hand, they knew signing up that the military has the final say on what is what. Maybe they feel that if they read something that is false but believe it they won't fight as hard which would put lives in danger. Shit, most news groups make up half their shit anyways. Maybe a US sniper while targeting his shot realizes that the person he's about to kill may have a family and while thinking back to his buddies blog that was written about family is then shot and killed by that target. Maybe their worried that reading this stuff too often isn't good for moral. Not that I believe all this but during a time like this their mission should be first on their mind and family just behind it. There are such things as letters and the mail service they can use. The internet is not something that they HAVE to have. Though if I was in charge, I'd say all the free porn you boys can look at is fair game.

Okay I admit I hadn't read this in detail until now. You're right on this one.

I fully expect to be tracked for agreeing with you, but then again, I may just be paranoid.
